Most people will go have their dentist do it, if it is the first time.  If you are having this done in the dentist office, he will apply a product or shield to protect the soft tissue of your gums. He will then use whitening bleach on your teeth, and usually a special light is also used. It will work best if your teeth are stained yellow, and may even work if they are brown usually from coffee, tea and soda.
